On 25 December 2025, the first event of the Winter School ‘Digital Detectives with Big Data’ took place: ‘Digital Detectives: Big Data in Your Phone’ 📊.
The event was attended by about 24 students from the graduating classes of Sumy Secondary School No. 1, who tried their hand at being data analysts and learned how big data works in the everyday digital world.
The event was conducted by senior lecturer of the Department of Economic Cybernetics Svitlana Volodymyrivna Kolomiyets, assistant Olena Vasylivna Kolotilina, and student of group EK.m-51 Ksenia Mohylna.
The schoolchildren immersed themselves in the world of Big Data through practical mini-tasks, working with digital traces in smartphones, and an exciting game that demonstrated how social media data influences business decisions and economic processes.
During the class, participants learned about:
• what Big Data is and how it is used 🧠;
• the application of big data in economics 💼;
• the impact of consumer behaviour on the market 📈;
• they practically solved cases from social media analysis 🔍.
Representatives of the department also introduced high school students to the specialities of the Sumy State University’s Faculty of Economics and Management and the educational programme ‘Economic Cybernetics’, which opens up opportunities for working with big data, modelling economic systems and applying mathematical methods in business analytics.
