In a year with a ponytail, the collection of awkward situations at interviews has been replenished with stories about video interviews. In order for your interview to go as well as possible, I advise you to follow a few simple tips from my own experience.
1️⃣. Specify the format of the video interview.
Sometimes companies do not specify in which format the online interview will take place (audio or video), or do not send an invitation in advance with a link to a video call. To avoid surprises, we advise you to take the initiative and ask the recruiter how the interview will go and what tool you will need for it.
2️⃣. Check your equipment and prepare a “plan B”.
Quiet sound or its absence, problems with the camera, unexpected problems with the Internet or the operating system – this happens very often. Therefore, before the interview, you should check your equipment, put a charger nearby, check the speed of the Internet and test the tool that you will use for the video interview. And all this — at least 5-10 minutes before the conversation 🙂
3️⃣. Find a quiet place and a neutral background.
4️⃣. Build a rapport with the interviewer.
To do this, maintain eye contact with the interviewer, be fully engaged in the conversation and do not interrupt the interviewer, gesture if it comes naturally to you, and smile if you really want to.
5️⃣. Remember: an interview is always an interview. Regardless of the format.
